Protect Your Garden
This piece is a personal take on the samurai quote, ‘Better to be a warrior in a garden, then a gardener in a war.’ Truth be told, I have always been interested in eastern culture, philosophies, and fables so it tends to bleed into a lot of my work.
When I was presented with an opportunity to paint a new mural at Imurj, I studied the ones that were there in order or their completion. …from Amber, to Chris, to Carbo, etc.
I also took the space, the lighting, and the colors of the businesses sharing the area into consideration.
I wanted it to have a staying power, and sort of bridge a gap. Most of the murals on the strip feature anthropomorphic figures and floral designs. (Common minds I suppose.) So I felt it only natural that the mine should pay homage of some sort.
Personally, I see Imurj is as bit of a breeding or cultivating space for the arts. There don’t seem to be many like it in the triangle area, so I felt that this… ‘samurai fox’ that guards this garden of various artistic species, was a solid fit.
It took much longer than expected to complete, but that allowed me to work through various lighting phases, and try to make sure that at least two to three elements of the piece are still interesting no matter the time or the weather of the day. Plus, there are several small details and ‘moments’ throughout, so I encourage anyone to take some time and check out the layers, textures, and contours of this work!
