Imurj’s Featured Artist Recording: Finian St. Omer – Let Him Know

There are countless topics and messages imbibed in the lyrics of modern music.  Politics, personal status, social issues, and frivolous revelry are widespread themes across all genres.  Artists tell stories of friends and rivalries, cities and nations, and the peoples within, but one topic has become rare in recent times, family.  In particular, the time and effort that goes into the creation of a new family. I’m not talking about allegiance or spousal love but rather sleepless nights, hard questions, and the massive sacrifices one would make for their children.  Finian St. Omer’s recent EP, The Family dives into the challenges and joys of raising his first child in a world that isn’t as accepting as it first seems.

How would you describe the creating of your EP’s single, Let Him Know?

The inspiration behind my song ‘Let Him Know’ was sparked from conversations I had with my wife that spanned months prior to our son being born on December 2, 2016.  We were tossing ideas back and forth on how we planned to raise him. We made the decision to be 100% truthful with him about how there is no such thing as Santa, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, etc.  The most important lesson to teach him was how society will perceive him as a young black child growing up in this crazy world of ours.

Fin produces most of his own music in his home studio by sampling other compositions and layering them on top of each other.  This process of arrangement blossomed in the early days of hip-hop when DJs began looping certain sections of entire songs while time-matching and layering on drum breaks.  Fin pays homage to these pioneers throughout this EP, giving it an old-school authentic feel.

When I started the production of the song I had no idea where to begin. But when I found the sample it all started to come together. I pitched the tempo of the song up and recorded into my Maschine. From there I chopped up the sample and began to create the arrangement.  Then I started playing around with the filters to help raise the low end and bring out the bassline of the sample. Then the hard part of finding the right kick and snare came into play. It took me about 30 minutes to decide on my snare. But when it hit me, it hit me!! After that, the lyrics spilled on to the paper and ‘Let Him Know’, a series of conversations with my wife became the first single to an EP that was inspired by a photo I took of my wife and son on the beach during our vacation in Nags Head, NC.
