“Gotta Be Us” holds a very special place in my heart. The inspiration for this song hit me on the tail end up after making up with my wife after a heated argument. Even though this conversation was a difficult one, as we made up, I started thinking about the durability of our relationship. I thought about how confident I was that we could make it through anything because our love for one another is just that strong. I should mention that before tying the knot, I never had a relationship last longer than a year, but here we are six years later. As the great John Legend put it, we are “past the infatuation phase.” These thoughts remained in my subconscious as I started listening to a couple of beats that I had purchased from a California-based producer by the name of Ty Rose. I pressed play, the first chord struck, and I had been inspired to write the 2nd most streamed song from my recently released EP, Destiny Reimagined.

I love this song because it was inspired by what I care the most about in this world! “Gotta Be Us” is unique for several reasons: The chord progression is simple, yet beautiful; It allowed me to sing (and rap, of course) about my love; and it gave me an opportunity to showcase a little bit of my lyricism over a more modern Hip-Hop drum pattern. Meaningful music has a long way to travel—from your heart to your mind; from the pen to the paper; from your voice through the microphone; and from the rough cut to the final master. Because of this long journey, you sometimes worry that the mastered track will sound nothing like the seed of inspiration you first felt in your soul. This time I was lucky; it came out exactly how I had imagined it!

My hope is that this song inspires lovers to put in the work that it takes to make a relationship last, even when the obstacles seem insurmountable. It is hard to find real love in this world and even harder to keep it. When you’ve found the one, don’t let them go no matter what.

What I hope people appreciate most about “Destiny Reimagined” is the lyricism. I enjoy being an artist, but my passion is writing, creating. My dream is to someday be able to write Hip-Hop, rap, and R&B songs for other artists full-time. Until then, I’m riding the wave, appreciating every opportunity I have to share my art. Thank you for listening!
